NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Nashville Predators announced Roman Josi as the franchise’s seventh captain Tuesday afternoon.

Drafted by Nashville in 2008, Roman is the second Swiss player to ever be named captain in league history.

Predators’ General Manager, David Poile, called the newly-named captain a “terrific ambassador of the game.”

“He has the ability to lead men and the work ethic to set the right example for our group,” said head coach Peter Laviolette. “Roman is the perfect fit to be the next captain of the Nashville Predators.”

The captain position became vacant after longtime player Mike Fisher announced his retirement in early August.

Ryan Ellis was also named associate captain, while Mattias Ekholm, Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen were all made alternates.

The announcement was on the same day the hometown team starts their preseason. The Predators will take on the Florida Panthers in two games Tuesday.

The Predators regular season begins Oct. 5 in Boston.
