FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A deaf man became engaged with the help of Santa Claus at an Indiana mall Thursday evening.

Sean Sikes proposed to his girlfriend Mikki Bergman at the mall because she loves shopping and the holiday season, so he wanted to have Santa involved.

Sikes said he had the ring for the last month and had been planning when to propose ever since.

He finally settled on a plan Thursday morning around 10 a.m. to propose to his girlfriend at the mall. Sikes texted family and friends at the last minute to get them to the mall so that they could be there for the proposal. All of their children were involved in the event.

Sikes planned to have Bergman’s daughter sit on Santa’s lap. Santa asked Bergman’s daughter what she wants for Christmas, and then she whispered into Santa’s ear to deliver the proposal to her mom. Santa then talked to Bergman directly while her daughter interpreted the proposal. Bergman then turned and Sikes was on one knee ready to propose with the ring.

Bergman said she was surprised and didn’t realize she was being proposed to until her boyfriend got down on one knee. It turned out to be perfect timing for her birthday, which is Saturday.

The couple is hoping to keep their engagement around two years for wedding planning purposes.
