COFFEE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A woman was killed and a man was injured in an early morning crash on Interstate 24 East in Coffee County.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Zachary Kilburn was driving a Ford Ranger pickup truck around 1 a.m. Saturday.

He reportedly tried to change lanes at mile marker 99 but ended up clipping a tractor-trailer to the right of him. Kilburn then went back into the left lane, lost control of his truck, and crashed on the right hand shoulder.

His passenger, 24-year-old Karlea Hedgepath, of Smyrna, was killed.

Kilburn was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga by air ambulance, but no details were immediately released about his condition.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The THP says Kilburn was speeding at the time of the crash, and neither him nor Hedgepath were wearing seat belts.

Criminal charges are pending in the case.
