MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WATE) – The Hamblen County Director of Schools confirms a teacher was dismissed after posting to Snapchat a photo of a student with a racial slur.

Dale Lynch, the Hamblen County Director of Schools, said Katie Beth Rich was dismissed Friday for unprofessional conduct. He said Rich was in her first year as a teaching assistant at East Ridge Middle School and the sixth-grade basketball coach.

Someone called East Ridge Middle School Thursday to complain about a Snapchat story posted by “Katie Beth,” according to Lynch. The post showed a picture of a student in class and said, “Damn [explicit] tried hitting me with a desk.”

Lynch said Rich admitted to making the post when he talked with her. According to Lynch, she said she was “frustrated,” this was “not in character” and she didn’t know why she made the post. He said parents of the student were also contacted.
