MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – A racially-charged note found in a local high school has a student worried about her safety.
The note, which reads “YOU N****** HAVE TO LEAVE,” was found by student Alana Hills in the girls locker room bathroom.
Alana, a bi-racial freshman, talked to News 2 with her mother present.
“It makes me uncomfortable,” she said. “I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to hear it. But that’s just how it is, apparently.”
Before turning the note in to school officials, she sent a picture of the note to her mom, Nicole.
“I see this picture and I instantly got cold chills,” said Nicole Hills. “I wanted to cry.”
Rutherford County Schools officials say the school is investigating and sent a statement to News 2.
“Rutherford County Schools does not tolerate racial slurs or threats against our students,” the statement said.
District spokesman James Evans said school officials will look at surveillance footage from inside the school to try and find out who left the note.
Alana stayed home from school on Friday, worried about her safety. While it’s not known if the note was directed at her, it’s made her nervous.
“I don’t feel as safe as I possibly could be.”
