NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Marcus Mariota threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, but the Titans fell in San Diego 43-35 Sunday.
It was an up and down day for Mariota, who finished with 313 yards through the air, but was also picked off twice and fumbled for a third turnover.
San Diego raced out to a 16-0 lead as the Titans struggled to slow down Phillip Rivers and the Chargers’ attack.
That’s when Mariota brought the Titans back with two touchdown passes to Rishard Matthews. The second came with only 14 seconds left in the first half to make it a 19-14 Chargers lead at the break.
Mariota gave the Titans a 21-19 lead in the third when he scored on a 14-yard run that saw him dive head first over the pylon.
The defense couldn’t make the lead stick though as Melvin Gordon gave the lead back to San Diego with a one-year TD run on the ensuing drive. The Titans had no answer for Gordon who finished the game 196 yards on the ground and dominated a Titans defense that had shut down virtually every run game they saw this season.
Turnovers plagued the Titans down the stretch. Mariota had a fumble and interception both returned for scores. and ultimately that was too much for the Titans to overcome.
The Titans fall to 4-5 on the season and host Green Bay next Sunday.
