NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – This is an exciting week in country music with big stars preparing for the red carpet at the CMA Awards on Wednesday.

But Monday night belonged to the writers—the men and women who pen those great songs we love to sing.

They were honored at the ASCAP Awards held at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

“This is a great chance to say to our writers who have written the great songs of the year at ASCAP, to say thank you and honor amazing talent as well showing up,” said president Paul Williams.

Lots of stars attended the ceremony, including Maddie and Tae for their song “Fly.”

“We wrote that when we first moved to town and were just 17 and just like living in an apartment by ourselves,” the group told News 2. “It’s pretty cool to be honored for a song you wrote in a tougher time of your life, you know.”

Two of Monday night’s honors went to Chris Stapleton, who received the Vanguard Award, and Ricky Skaggs, who received the ASCAP Founders Award.
