ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WCMH) — A New Mexico mother is going viral after fulfilling a strange request from her son.

Since the beginning of the school year, Josette Duran has been packing her son two lunches, all because he asked her to. It wasn’t that one lunch wasn’t enough for him; it was because he was giving the extra lunch to another boy.

“He said, ‘No mom, it’s for this little boy at school  and he sits by himself and all he eats is a fruit cup,’” said Duran.

The little boy’s mother recently lost her job and couldn’t afford school lunches. Duran was all too familiar with the mother’s situation.

“This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless,” Duran said. “I was living in my car, I was washing him in bathrooms, and we didn’t have any food.”

Duran was recently called into the school principal’s office because the mother of the little boy found out that Duran had been packing an extra lunch for her son and wanted to pay her back.

“She says, ‘Um, I know this isn’t much, but I just got a job and I know you’ve been feeding my son,’” Duran said. She couldn’t accept any of the single mother’s money.

Duran also coaches a girls’ volleyball team. The team raised more than $400 to pay Duran back for the kindness of packing an extra lunch, but she took the money right to the school cafeteria.

“We paid up all the past due accounts for all the kids that need lunch, right? So now, no one in that school owes any lunch money to anybody, and everybody can eat.”
