LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The mother of one of the two suspects accused in the murder of a Nashville tourist is speaking out. The couple’s neighbors are also reacting to the arrests.
Andy Nunez, 22, and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Daniela Cruz, were both wanted for homicide in connection to the Sept. 25 murder of Teddy Grasset, who was visiting from California.
The couple was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, Thursday night. Authorities are continuing to search for a third suspect.
On Friday, News 2 visited the Cedar Glen Mobile Home Community in La Vergne, where Nunez and Cruz live.
Cruz’s mother became very emotional and started crying after hearing her daughter had been arrested for murder in North Carolina.
“I believe she was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said. “My daughter is young and started dating a guy and probably didn’t know any better when she got involved.”
Carlos and Yesenia Maradiaga live next door to Nunez and were surprised to hear that he was arrested for murder.
“I was honestly shocked because I would have never guessed from someone who keeps to themselves really and never really had a ruckus or anything,” Carlos said. “It’s sad to see someone that young throw their lives away so early, you know, I mean, stay in school. The best I can say and maybe things like that won’t happen.”
Yesenia added, “You just can’t be too trusting of your neighbors. Maybe you’ve never been able too, but you can’t now with everything that’s coming to light.”
She often saw Cruz at the bus stop picking up a small child.
“Its mind-boggling, vert mind-boggling, because we know we are not bad people, but you don’t know the people around you, no matter how nice they may seem,” she said.
Neighbors sympathize with the mother.
“A parent can always do their best, but overall they grown, they make their own decisions, whether bad or good and it could be heartbreaking for the parent.”
