NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Dozens of volunteers from the Volunteers State are working with the American Red Cross on hurricane relief efforts.

Fifty-five Tennesseans have been deployed with the Red Cross to Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Eight of the volunteers are from the Nashville area.

The American Red Cross has deployed a total of 1,800 volunteers to the southeastern coast of the United States to help set up shelters and offer other services.

Around 27,000 people woke up in Red Cross shelters Friday morning.

“For those people who have nowhere else to go, it’s crucial that we have people that are able to help them,” said Nashville Red Cross volunteer Scott Toncray.
