Lafayette officer finds pipe bomb inside vehicle during traffic stop

LAFAYETTE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A pipe bomb was found during a traffic stop Monday night in Lafayette, Tennessee.

The device was discovered around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 52 West near Bratton Town Circle at Sunshine Market.

According to the Lafayette police captain, an officer pulled over a driver for expired plates.

The driver allowed the officer to search his vehicle and the pipe bomb was found on the passenger side of the vehicle, on the floorboard.

Police said the two men, who allegedly made the device, claimed they did not know it was illegal.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene and safely detonated the device at 1 a.m.

Authorities have not released the identities of the men at this time.

The driver has been charged with DUI, and both men have been charged with possession of a controlled substance and destructive item.

Additional charges are pending.
