Woman critically injured in Clarksville shooting dies

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A woman critically injured in a Clarksville shooting Sunday has died from her injuries.

The shooting occurred at 12:55 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 1500 block of Cedar Springs Circle.

Clarksville police took 19-year-old Demarkus Ely, of Mobile, Alabama, into custody Sunday evening and charged him with aggravated assault. Following the victim’s death, additional charges are pending.

According to authorities, Ely got into an argument with another person and then opened fire.

Instead of shooting the individual he was arguing with, he shot Ashley Ashworth, 19, who was sitting next to the intended target.

Ashworth was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police later caught up to Ely soon after a description of him was released.

He was booked into the Montgomery County jail on $1,000,000 bond.
