NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A University of Tennessee standout is changing his jersey number this year to honor a Knoxville teen killed while shielding friends from gunfire.
Zaevion Dobson’s family accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in his honor at this year’s ESPY’s.
Shortly after, in one of the biggest stages in college football, Vol safety Todd Kelly, Jr. is making sure Zaevion’s legacy lives on.
“I knew that it meant a lot, a lot to him because he is looking down and smiling because he wanted to play division one football. So me wearing the numbers 24, I feel like his legacy lives on,” Kelly said.
Kelly’s mother and father say they’re not surprised by their son’s decision.
They say this is just an example of his true character shining through.
