Franklin firefighter dies in crash while on mission trip to Honduras

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Franklin firefighter died in a crash while on a mission trip with his church to Honduras over the weekend.


According to a release, Dimitris “JD” Fotopoulos died from his injuries sustained in a motorbike accident.

Fotopoulos had worked with the Franklin Fire Department for the past nine years.

During his time with the department, he earned a Unit Citation for Valorous Conduct in 2010 for rescuing a woman from a house fire. He also earned three Phoenix Awards for saving the lives of three people in cardiac arrest.

“JD was larger than life and never met a stranger. He was recognized among his peers for his excellent attitude and compassion for others. This is a huge loss to our fire department family and he will be greatly missed,” Chief Rocky Garzarek said.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately complete.
