KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Vols kick off the season Thursday night at home against Appalachian State, but two fans have more celebrating to do. They plan to get married in Neyland Stadium.
Lovebirds Mona Largent and Brent Akin have been dating for year.
“We’re excited. We’re excited about getting married. We’re excited about the game. We’re excited about being here in Knoxville,” said Largent.
The huge Vols fans met during last year’s football season opener in Nashville at an alumni tailgate party. They say it was love at first sight.
“I said, ‘Okay, you’ve got the best hair for a UT fan.’ That was the first thing that came out of my mouth,” said Akin.
Fast forward a year later. They’re getting some early stadium access Thursday.
“It’s just perfect,” said Largent.
They’re getting hitched right before the game..
“I can’t think of a better venue for us,” said Akin.
It’s the closest thing to a church for them. Akin used to play guard for the team and Largent is an alumna member of Sigma Kappa. They attended school together but never crossed paths.
The couple hasn’t set an exact time or location inside the stadium for the “I dos,” but they think it’ll be before kickoff.
“We got to get this game won and start the season off right, and start our marriage off right,” said Akin.
The couple went to five games last year and in all of those games, Tennessee won. They hope that luck helps the team this year. They plan to go to all of the big games.
Akin’s former teammate Tim Irwin is officiating the wedding. He has to work on their wedding day, so the couple is working around his schedule for the time and location of the wedding inside of the stadium.
