NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Common sense can go a long way when it comes to ensuring your safety while you’re out running or exercising, but sometimes we can do things to put ourselves in a dangerous situation without realizing it.
It’s always best to stay in populated areas and to run with a partner or a dog. It’s simple but affective as a partner makes you a less attractive target.
Leave the headphones at home; you can’t stay vigilant if you can’t hear a potential attacker.
Make sure to change your route and the time you run. A specific routine allows someone to plan out an attack.
Many experts will also tell you to bring your cell phone with you if you do end up jogging by yourself.
There are plenty of fitness bands available that allow you to have your phone on you with out weighing your pockets down.
Experts also suggest running against traffic because it makes it harder for someone to abduct you in a car if you see it coming. It also helps you avoid traffic related accidents.
But sometimes, no matter how careful we are, we can still find ourselves in dangerous situations. Thankfully, there are tools that can help to empower you to protect yourself.
Mace, a heavy-duty flashlight, and a stun gun can help disable your attacker for several seconds, giving you time to flee.
For mace, there are several different styles that are light and easy to carry. One News 2 picked up at Dick’s Sporting Goods also contains an invisible UV dye to mark an assailant and aid in identification.
Flashnight stun guns are also a good option as they’re hard to recognize and the shock disables an attacker long enough to get away and find help. They are sold at the Nashville Armory and here on Amazon.
Another product available online for $27 is called TigerLady. It’s portable and fits into the palm of your hand with an attachment for your wrist.
A lot of people use the tool as a running grip, but if you’re attacked, you can squeeze and claws pop out. The claws are plastic, so it’s not considered a lethal weapon, but it is enough to stun your attacker and give you enough time to get away.
If you take a closer look at the retractable claws, you’ll see they’re designed to capture skin and DNA, which means you don’t even have to see your attacker to help catch them.
Don’t be an easy target. Stay aware of your surroundings and know how to protect yourself in the rare case of an attack.
