NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – One of the top science teachers in the country is right here in Middle Tennessee and will soon be honored by President Obama.
Laura Darnall of Goodpasture Christian School is passionate about science and was just named a winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.
The nomination process takes nearly two years.
Darnall, who is also Goodpasture’s girls soccer coach, learned about her nomination while in the locker room.
“I got the email and it said you must keep this confidential, so I just had a big joy inside and was like ‘ahh’ and I couldn’t say anything but one of my girls noticed it and said ‘What is it?’ and I said’ ‘I can’t tell you,’” said Darnall.
Darnall believes her students can excel in whatever they put their mind to and instills that in them every day.
“You just have to know what your weaknesses are and work on them to gain new skills,” added Darnall.
Darnall and her husband go to Washington next week for the award presentation. They will be among 200 teachers across the nation to receive the award and meet President Obama.
