North Carolina woman tries to drown, smother her toddler nephew

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities say a woman tried to drown and smother her 2-year-old nephew while caring for him in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Saturday.

The incident was reported as an “unconscious juvenile” call, according to Fayetteville police.

“The investigation revealed that Regina Durr was caring for her nephew at a relative’s home and attempted to drown and smother the child,” police said.

The toddler was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and has since been released in good condition.

Durr, 24, was charged with attempted first degree murder and felony child abuse.

She remains in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $500,000 secured bond.
