News broke in the school community late Sunday that Shepard was terminated as the Wilson girls’ softball coach and suspended by school officials as a math teacher.

Shepard’s 2015 girls’ softball team won the Class AAA state championship for Wilson Central.

The school district had scheduled a 3 p.m. meeting Wednesday to deal with the results of its own investigation of Shepard, but his resignation was instead submitted and approved by the board.

Shepard had been with the Wilson County school district since 2009.
