RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A 9-year-old girl from Virginia Beach is working to collect and donate 10,000 Barbie dolls to homeless and foster kids.

Gianni Graham came up with the idea last Christmas after she received four Barbie dolls.

“My aunt recently just adopted three foster kids and they didn’t come with any Barbies,” Gianni recalled.

Since then, Gianni has collected and donated more than 1,600 Barbie dolls in Norfolk and the Richmond area.

“Barbies inspire me,” she said. “I like the quote on the back of the Barbie that says, ‘I can be anything’ and that’s why I chose Barbies.”

Sharon Richardson with C2Adopt said Gianni’s efforts has helped many foster kids in Richmond and has inspired both adults and children.

“She knows they might be going through a hard time,” Richardson said. “This gives them something to hold onto and also the idea that she did this. I think for them is wonderful because it let’s them know that somebody cares about them.”

Gianni said she is hoping to get more kids on her team to help reach her goal of 10,000 donations.
