Man killed, wife injured after being hit by SUV in Sumner County

SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man was killed and his elderly wife was injured after they were both stuck by an SUV Monday evening in Sumner County.

It happened in the 2200 block of Rock Bridge Road, close to Portland, Tenn., around 6:45 p.m.

Authorities told News 2 Charles and Mary Scruggs were picking up cans along the road when the crash occurred.

Mary Scruggs was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Charles Scruggs was killed in the collision.

The driver of the SUV told authorities sun was in his eyes at the time.

The investigation is ongoing.

Additional information was not immediately released.
