RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – Rutherford County has decided not to re-assign school resource officers in elementary schools.
County Commissioner Doug Shafer confirmed to News 2 the decision was made with a 7-0 vote Thursday night during the Budget, Finance & Investment Committee meeting.
District 17 Commissioner Jeff Phillips started the conversation about reallocating the number of SROs in elementary schools only, making them part-time.
However, there was an outcry by concerned parents when they learned that SROs may have to split their time between two schools.
They were worried that it would be put their children’s safety at risk.
“It was good we took a look at this. All the principals supported the SROs in schools, and basically all emails and phone calls that we received overwhelmingly supported keeping the SROs,” said Shafer.
