NEW YORK (AP) – Hundreds of people donning purple outfits have gathered in New York City to celebrate Prince at a Spike Lee party ahead of the late legend’s 58th birthday.

The group gathered Saturday in Brooklyn. The party featured giveaways of purple hats and posters with performances throughout the day.

Partygoers at the six-hour event braved the hot sun to listen to Prince hits like “Alphabet Street” and “Erotic City.”

Lee held an impromptu dance party in Brooklyn after the singer died on April 21.

He also held a similar celebration honoring Michael Jackson in the years since his 2009 death.

An autopsy revealed this week that Prince died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, a powerful opioid painkiller that’s up to 50 times more potent than heroin.
