MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – Dozens of people went to the Rutherford County courthouse to protest a proposed hotel tax Thursday night.

The tax would be one of the highest in the nation.

The county wants to raise the hotel tax by 2.5 percent to pay for nine new firefighters.

The city of Murfreesboro also wants to add a 2.5 hotel tax on top of the county tax.

Hospitality industry workers told News 2 the increase would hurt business.

“There are over 50 hotels here, including a convention center and there are a lot of sports teams that come here to stay in hotels. Right now, Murfreesboro is a success to the state and what we think this is going to be a reversal of success,” said Greg Adkins with Tennessee Hospitality and Tourism.

The increase has already passed the Rutherford County steering committee.

The county commission could vote as early as May 12.
