It would go to a graduating Gatlinburg-Pittman High School student in the memory of Justin and Stephanie Shults.
“I’m hoping that it inspires someone and gives them hope and opportunity to fulfill their dream, no matter what it may be,” Rexene Shults, Justin’s aunt said.
Justin graduated in 2004 from the school and was known as a model student and also an athlete. Family members talked with school administrators on Tuesday about the idea.
“We would be honored as a school to be able to perpetuate their memory in such a positive way,” Tony Ogle, Gatlinburg-Pittman High’s principal said.
Along with developing a scholarship, Justin’s aunt said a family whose children went to school around the same time as Justin want to plant a dogwood tree in front of the school to honor the couple. They want to dedicate the tree with a plaque.
The scholarship would be for a graduating Gatlinburg-Pittman High School student to put toward college tuition. The goal is to have it in place by next school year.
“I hope it brings some comfort to a lot of people and the genuine feeling of love and admiration for those that have gone before us and they are still giving back,” Shults said.
