NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – There’s a movement to add more women to Tennessee’s legislature.
The group Women for Tennessee’s Future (WTF) says only 17 percent of state lawmakers are women.
Monday night, the group announced they have recruited more than 20 women to run for the state Senate and House this year.
“They are not politicians. There’s a couple of Army veterans, there are teachers… These are people who care about the future of Tennessee and about the safety and health of our community,” said Bonnie Dow, co-founder of the group.
All of the women running for office are Democrats and pushing for Insure Tennessee as well as better education across the state.
According to WTF’s website, the amount of women running is “historic.” Their official announcement will be held Tuesday morning.
