MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – Middle Tennessee State University is now the subject of a federal investigation into its athletic department.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) within the U.S. Department of Education said it received a complaint against the university on Nov. 19.

The complaint alleges the school discriminates against women in the athletic program, unfairly providing male athletes more resources and opportunities.

The OCR said the complaint specifically says the university “fails to provide equal athletic opportunities to males and females with respect to” the following areas:
– The provision of travel and per diem
– Assignment and compensation of coaches
– Locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities and services
– Housing and dining facilities and services

The federal department is now investigating and looking into the “legal issue of whether benefits and services for male and female university athletes are equivalent as required by Title IX.”
