NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – An attempted robbery suspect was apprehended when a customer tripped him as he tried to flee a Belle Meade Walgreens Monday afternoon.
According to a police report, 37-year-old Freddie Spruytenburg approached the pharmacy counter at the Walgreens located at 5301 Harding Pike with a note.
The note reportedly said Spruytenburg was robbing the pharmacy, that he was armed and various medications he wanted.
Metro police reported the pharmacist handed Spruytenburg a bag with the requested medications and the suspect attempted to exit the store.
As he fled, the pharmacist and pharmacy tech yelled for security.
A customer who was at the counter heard the calls for assistance, tripped the suspect and held Spruytenburg on the ground until police arrived, according to police.
According to the arrest report, Spruytenburg told detectives he did not put much planning into the robbery attempt and that it sounded like a better idea than it turned out to be.
Spruytenburg was booked into the Metro jail and charged with aggravated robbery and two counts of possessing medication without a prescription. His bond was set at $80,000.
