BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) — Addiction Campuses is offering financial help to people who need to get help kicking an addiction this holiday season.
The organization created a $100,000 scholarship fund and the original deadline to apply has been extended to the last day of the year.
“The harsh reality is a lot of people who are on drugs will be dead, in jail or on the street by the end of the year,” Public Relations Manager Brian Sullivan said. “We wanted to do something to make a difference in their lives.”
Addiction Campuses has treatment facilities for alcohol and substance abuse, as well as mental health issues.
During the holidays, calls to the Brentwood call center spike.
“Christmas time is the time of year when we get our most intense calls,” Sullivan said. “It is the time family members start to suspect that something may be going on because they are around their loved ones more right now.”
Heroin overdoses specifically are causing great concern in Tennessee because they used to be rare, but now are an almost every day occurrence.
In 2010 there were 177 deaths due to heroin according to the TBI. In 2014 that number jumped to 895.
Addiction Campuses is also accepting donations to its Spring To Life program. It is a non-profit and the donation is tax deductible.
