NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Conventions are held all the time in Nashville, and on Tuesday the city hosted the country’s largest cheerleading organization who says cheerleading should be a sport.
If your child is a cheerleader, chances are they’ve attended one of Varsity’s camps or competitions. The organization hosts the cheerleading and dance team competitions seen on TV.
Currently NCAA does not list cheerleading as a sport, and in Tennessee, TSSAA lists it as an “activity” on its website.
Varsity’s founder, Jeff Webb, says it should be a sport and so much more.
“Cheerleading is more than a sport. You can’t put it in a box. Is there a competition element, yes. But, there’s also leadership and support in all other sports,” Webb explained.
He continued, “We do it a disservice by putting it in a box. It is very athletic and there is a competitive element but there’s a lot more than that.”
Webb also said girls who are cheerleaders in high school are more likely to have better grades and more likely to be leaders.
