WATERFORD, N.Y. (WTEN) – Seal watchers and members of the Canal Corporation in New York saw a baby seal pop up a few times Friday morning.
They are waiting for the water to get low enough so that an experienced rescue group can go in and retrieve the seal.
The seal, which was first seen by a canal employee in July, is being temporarily kept inside Lock 1 so that it can be safely rescued before the water freezes over.
It was a bit of serendipity as to how it became pinned inside the lock.
This past week the Canal Corporation was preparing for yearly maintenance. When they closed up the lock, the seal was unintentionally closed in.
It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, making it easier to capture the seal and in the end help it return to the ocean.
