SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – It was an exciting day in Smyrna as construction is now underway for a new elementary school to replace one of Rutherford County’s oldest and most crowded.
Students at John Colemon Elementary School go to be the ones who first broke ground Thursday.
The new school will be rebuilt on campus on Wise Drive, just off Weakley Lane.
Currently, the school is so overcrowded they have 15 classes in portables.
“I think sometimes the ones outside feel like they’re left out or they aren’t part of the school, and that gets our unity and family back,” said Principal Ann Haley. “That is a really important part of us as a unit.”
The new school will also have four computer labs and new technology in classrooms.
It’s expected to be complete by the end of winter break next year.
