WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning county residents about their recent accounts on a telephone tax scam.
The sheriff office has stated that they have received reports from a person claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service.
Residents have received calls from a man claiming to be an IRS agent in Ontario, Canada, he then tells them a payment must be made immediately or they will be arrested.
The calls are coming from the number 347-418-0414 and are believed to be routed through a bank of phones in Canada. It’s not known where the calls originate.
The sheriff’s office has confirmed that the IRS does not demand payment over the phone, an IRS personal will always contact you by mail.
If you believe you have been contacted by a tax scam, please report it to sheriff’s office at 615-790-5550 or your local police department. The US Treasury Inspector General also wants you to report these calls to 1-800-366-4484.
