NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Two Dupont Tyler Middle Prep instructors have been charged with heroin possession and placed on administrative leave after Metro officers witnessed a drug transaction between the two in a public parking lot.

Joshua Johnson, 30, of Mt. Juliet, and Michael Clendening, 46, of Antioch, were each charged with misdemeanor possession of heroin and are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.

Officers from Metro’s Specialized Investigations Division were on assignment when they spotted a hand-to-hand drug transaction take place in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on Charlotte Pike near 14th Avenue North.

Detectives followed a 2006 Ford Mustang driven by Johnson and stopped it at 14th Avenue and Hynes Street. Clendening was sitting in the passenger seat.

The two admitted to purchasing approximately two grams of heroin each for a total of $800, according to authorities.

Police recovered two plastic baggies of what they believe to be heroin from an air vent of the Mustang.

Authorities said that because the amount of heroin was only a misdemeanor amount, and neither Johnson nor Clendening had any outstanding warrants or history of failing to appear in court, they were issued arrest citations in lieu of being physically arrested.

Both men signed paperwork agreeing to appear for booking between 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Nov. 6.

Michael Clendening and Josh Johnson, teachers at DuPont Tyler Middle Prep, were both given misdemeanor arrest citations this past weekend for drug possession. Immediately upon becoming aware of their citations, district officials placed both men on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure in these situations.” said Metro Schools in a statement.
