CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) – A dog was shot in the head during a burglary in south St Petersburg will undergo an emergency surgery at the BluePearl Veterinary Partners hospital in Clearwater, the hospital said in a press release.

Anubis, a 5-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback, lives in St. Petersburg on 15th Street South with his owner Chip Watson. Watson adopted the pup when it was 8 weeks old. Anubis’s sixth birthday is coming up on on Oct. 9.

This Monday morning Watson came home to find his sliding door broken and his house in total disarray, according to St Petersburg Police. Anubis was nowhere to be seen and he didn’t come when Watson called him.

St. Petersburg Police officers responded to the burglary. They helped Watson look for Anubis and the pup finally showed up, covered in blood.

“They didn’t have to hurt him,” Watson told BluePearl. “He’s the sweetest 115-pound ridgeback you’ve ever met. He would have gone and hid in his cage.”

Watson rushed Anubis to an emergency veterinarian and then they were referred to the BluePearl. The dog is in stable condition but has a bullet fragment in his neck. His is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Dr. Andrea Smith, a board-certified veterinary surgeon with BluePearl will perform the surgery.

“He’s a great dog,” Chip Watson said. “I don’t know why anyone would do something like this to him.”
