SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – A stretch of roadway in Smyrna now memorializes a Boy Scout hit and killed along Interstate 24 in Rutherford County in April 2014.

Friends and family are behind the special tribute to Clifton Braunwalder.

A sign with the words, “Clifton Braunwalder Memorial Mile” has been placed near the Sam Ridley Parkway exit in Smyrna.

Prior to his death, Clifton was involved in sports, Boy Scouts and served the community.

Braunwalder, 13, was killed by a hit-and-run driver while trying to change his mom’s flat tire. The driver was later taken into custody.

Another memorial sign was previously placed near where he was struck, but all roadside memorials have to be approved by state lawmakers.

The new memorial has been approved and was recently put in place by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
