MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) – An alert citizen helped capture a shoplifting suspect Thursday night after he held the man at gunpoint until Mt. Juliet police arrived.
Police reported James Handy, 36, of Lebanon stole a hat and sunglasses worth $37 from Mt. Juliet’s Walmart and fled from pursuing officers around 5:45 p.m.
Handy reportedly ran into a wooded area near the Triple Crown subdivision and Pleasant Grove Road, prompting officers to establish a perimeter in an effort to take him into custody.
During the search, investigators learned Handy was wanted out of three Tennessee counties and Texas for various charges.
A text alert message was sent via Mt. Juliet’s Nixle alert system to notify the public of the active search that included Handy’s description.
As officers searched the wooded area, Handy ran into the Triple Crown neighborhood around 6:45 p.m.
According to police, an alert citizen spotted Handy in his backyard on Citation Court and held him at gunpoint until officers could arrive.
Handy was booked into the Wilson County jail and charged with theft, resisting arrest and evading arrest. He was wanted in Wilson County for failure to appear, Jackson County for evading arrest, Smith County for probation violation and Texas for larceny.
