BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) – Addiction rates are increasing across Tennessee with the state ranking as one of the top in prescription painkiller abuse, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
With September being National Recovery Month, locally-based addiction treatment center Addiction Campuses launched an RV tour of Tennessee on Monday called “5 Cities in 5 Days.”
Tennessee tops the nation in painkiller use with 143 prescriptions per 100 people
“They’re not the person on the street, they’re the person next door at thebarbecue in modern suburbia, they’re the soccer mom or house wife who got an injury, twisted their ankle and was prescribed a prescription painkiller and it got out of control,” said Brian Sullivan with Addiction Campuses.
Sullivan explained the stigma associated with addiction often keeps people from seeking help.
“A large number of people we talk to are mothers and wives that are worried about getting help because they think, ‘What will people think of me? Will they think I was a bad mom?’”
The Addiction Campuses RV is headed to Jackson on Thursday and will end its tour in Memphis on Friday.
