NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – An 11-year-old faces charges after allegedly bringing a gun onto campus and threatening a fellow student.

Administrators at LEAD Prep Southeast School, located on Metroplex Drive, discovered the .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the sixth grader’s backpack after receiving a tip from a student.

Police said the boy threatened to shoot the student who saw the gun if he told adults.

The weapon was found unloaded, and no ammunition was located.

The 11-year-old is in juvenile detention. Police are working to determine where the child got the pistol.

The following statement was sent to News 2 from school officials:

Police responded at LEAD’s request to investigate a security incident at the school on Metroplex Drive. No students nor any teachers were harmed as a result of the incident. Both LEAD officials and Metropolitan Nashville Police responded swiftly and professionally. Because the incident involved a weapon in a student’s backpack and is an ongoing police matter, the school is handling it in accordance with our zero tolerance policy. Our families were notified accordingly.

We want to thank Metropolitan Nashville Police for its swift response and we want to thank the LEAD Prep Southeast community for their patience and understanding as today’s events unfolded. Nothing is more important in our schools than school security. We are dedicated to providing our students with a safe, positive and productive environment so that they can receive the education they so richly deserve. We have no further comment at this time.
