NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — In the NFL there’s always a lot of talk about teams and rankings, but what about ranking the field itself?
It turns out the NFL Players Association thinks the Titans have one of the best and News 2 found the man responsible: Terry Porch.
“We mow it pretty much every day during the growing season so that we can create that turf to get a little tighter. Keep it looking good,” he told News 2.
He’s been the Titans field manager going on 17 seasons, and he’s precise.
“It’s really nice when you have a perfectly green field like you are starting and you see all the lines and numbers and hashes go down and you know you are ready for football,” he said.
Although the Titans play on it, it’s also his field, more personal than his own backyard.
He had to start from scratch after the Rolling Stones concert and the U.S. men’s soccer team roughed it up over the summer.
“So we had to come in with inch and a half thick grass that was grown on plastic so we could immediately put it down and they could immediately play on it and not have to worry about it coming up or growing in or anything,” he said.
The grass itself is a hybrid Bermuda. Porch says it’s one of the oldest varieties.
“I started this when I was 16 years old as a summer job in Kansas City working for the Royals and the Chiefs, kind of a summer job,” he said.
If you’ve been wondering if his own yard is as manicured as the titans’ field..
“When I get home, I don’t mow grass. Everybody says you must have a really nice yard and I’m always like, ‘ no.’ It’s pretty easy to find my house driving down the street look for the worst one and turn,” he said.
The players association voted the Titans field one of the best back in 2002.
