LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Louisville police say one person has died and another has been rescued following a trench collapse in southwestern Jefferson County.

Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley says the crew was apparently working on sewer pipes for a company out of Tennessee.

Smiley says police were called to the scene around 2:20 p.m. EDT Thursday.

Multiple media outlets report the man who was trapped for nearly five hours was pulled out by rescuers just before 7 p.m. Officials said he was conscious and helped direct rescuers where to dig. He was taken to a hospital after he was freed.

Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health is investigating along with police.
