86-year-old killed by police in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Tenn. (WKRN) – An 86-year-old man was shot and killed by police Thursday afternoon in Columbia.

Police said officers were called around 1 p.m. about a man who left his home in his car and was armed with weapons and threatening suicide.

Officers made contact with the man, identified by the TBI as Raymond Phillips, on Bear Creek Pike between Cranford and Rock Springs roads when police say he exited his car while pointing guns at officers.

Three officers defended themselves with gunfire, resulting in the man’s death.

None of the officers were injured.

As per standard procedure, they have been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing.

The investigation is being led by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, also standard in officer-involved shootings.

Bear Creek Pike remained closed until 10 p.m. as authorities remained on the scene.
