Pac-Man video game turns 35

CHICAGO, Ill. (WKRN) – Pac-Man, the legendary and iconic video game from the ’80s and ’90s, turns 35 on Friday. That makes him the same age as Kim Kardashian West, Ryan Gosling, and Channing Tatum.

Publisher Bandai Namco is started the birthday festivities a little early, updating the the mobile versions of Pac-Man and Pac-Man Lite earlier this month.

The design of the iconic Pac-Man character is supposed to be based on a pizza with a slice missing. However, Pac-man’s creator, Iwatani, later said the character design also came from simplifying and rounding out the Japanese character for mouth, “kuchi.”

The ghosts that pursue Pac-Man are nicknamed Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. While Blinky and Pinky are the most predictable and chase Pac-Man directly, Inky’s tactic is to ambush and Clyde is the one to fear most because his movements are random.

The arcade version of Pac-Man has a highest possible score of 3,333,360, which has been achieved by less than 10 people ever.
