Nashville law firm holds essay contest about texting, driving

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Nashville law firm is holding a $1,000 scholarship essay contest about texting and driving.

Hollins, Raybin & Weissman law firm is offering three scholarships to currently-enrolled Davidson and Williamson county students.

The essay prompt is, “If you had to convince just one friend not to text and drive, what would you say?”

The law firm aims to generate conversation among young people about the dangers of texting and driving as they believe peer-to-peer conversations can have much more profound impact.

On their website, the firm notes there are 11 teen deaths every day from texting and driving.

According to Virginia Tech, drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident if they are texting while driving, and the Centers for Disease Control notes one-third of the drivers in the U.S. reported they have read or sent texts or emails while driving.
