2 jockeys injured in Iroquois Steeplechase


NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Two jockeys were injured Saturday in the $150,000 Iroqouis Steeplechase at Percy Warner Park.

Both David Byrne and Robert Walsh fell in the third race and were transported to the hospital.

Byrne, who was riding Long House Saint, broke a bone in his neck.

News 2 learned he was operated on successfully and is now recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was not paralyzed in the accident.

Walsh, who was riding Bonded, broke his collarbone during the race. He was treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Demonstrative ultimately rallied to win the 3-mile race, beating four rivals, including two previous champions. Click here to view photos from the event.
