LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) – A woman originally from East Tennessee is trying to find her birth mother. She’s used social media to get her message out, but has run into some obstacles.
One piece of the puzzle that Nancy Gilbert and her adopted sister have been able to figure out is that her birth mother’s parents lived in Maryville, Tennessee, sometime in the 1990s.
They just started searching for her Monday and are hoping someone in East Tennessee might know her.
Gilbert, 23, from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is on a mission to find her biological mother. Over the years, she has sent Gilbert several things like a gold baby ring and an unsigned letter she will cherish forever.
“That’s an emotional thing because, you know, reading that, I know she was thinking of the time that we’d finally get to meet,” Gilbert said of the letter.
Gilbert recently visited her adopted sister Robyn VanLeigh in Lenoir City. They were raised by the same family.
VanLeigh found her birth mother in 2006 and now she’s trying to help Gilbert do the same. They decided to post on Facebook to see if anyone might know her biological mother and so far, more than 500 people have shared her post from across the country.
“It’s a really cool thing, but more than anything it makes me happy. It makes me absolutely thrilled that people are willing to help,” said VanLeigh.
So far, the two have figured out that Gilbert’s birth mother was born on January 6, has three brothers and one sister, and had a name picked out for her, among many other things.
Gilbert says the search has been years in the making and she’s willing to put in however much work it takes.
“Hopefully it won’t take too much longer because I’ve already waited 23 years,” she said.
Other clues they’ve figured out include finding out her birth mother’s father was in the military, but they’re not sure which branch. She was also placed in a foster home in the Atlanta area two weeks after she was born.
