HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Sumner County teen was found guilty Thursday of killing his mother with a sledgehammer in 2012.
Zachary Davis, who was 15 at the time of the crime, was convicted of attempted first degree murder and aggravated arson.
He attacked and killed his mother, 48-year-old Melanie Davis, with a sledgehammer while she slept in her bed on the night of Aug. 10, 2012.
Davis then went upstairs and started a fire in the family’s bonus room, leaving his older brother asleep in his bedroom upstairs. His brother was able to escape the fire unharmed.
Police said when Davis was arrested a short distance from the house, he was found with a notebook that contained a letter in which he confessed to killing his mother and leaving his brother to burn in the fire.
However, during Wednesday’s hearing, Davis denied responsibility.
The now 17-year-old will spend life in prison.
