22-year-old Fort Campbell soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (WKRN) – A 22-year-old soldier based out of Fort Campbell died Wednesday in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Officials said Spc. John Dawson of Whitinsville, Massachusetts, died of wounds he suffered after being attacked by small arms fire during an escort mission.

Spc. Dawson was assigned to 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division as a combat medic.

He joined the army in 2012 and was stationed at Fort Campbell the following year.

The 22-year-old is survived by his parents, Rhonda and Michael Dawson, also of Massachusetts.
