NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Nashville house-cleaning business is helping cancer patients and their families by mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting and anything else that needs to be touched up.

“We clearly needed help,” said cancer patient Cat Bradford. “It was too overwhelming for us to deal with breast cancer and cleaning at the same time.”

Bradford was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, after having an unrelated surgery doctors discovered she had ovarian cancer.

“It’s just non-stop tests, non-stop going to the doctor,” Bradford said.

Nashville house cleaning service Two Maids and A Mop stepped in to help the Bradford family.

It is one of over 1,200 cleaning businesses that donate their time to clean the homes of cancer patients through the national non-profit foundation Cleaning for a Reason.

“When you’re going through cancer and you’re battling something like that, it can affect your immune system, so having a clean home is super important,” said Andrea Bessone of the Nashville branch of Two Maids and a Mop.

She added, “Having someone clean the house for you just makes your life a little bit easier, less stressful and more manageable.”

Cleaning for a Reason started in 2006. The non-profit organization has recruited housekeeping-maid services around the country to donate their time and clean cancer patient’s homes for free.

As of lately, the effort has cleaned the homes of over 17,000 women.

“They require, when you start donating your services as a maid service, that you take on two cancer patients at a time. My branch takes on five at a time,” Bessone said.

The Bradfords told News 2 they’re fortunate to have the support of family and friends, but finding out that a local business would offer its support by cleaning house for free was incredible.

“It was really a break,” said Cat’s wife Laura. “There was just so much to do, with going to chemo and caring for her and just all of the stuff that comes with cancer the research and the stress we just didn’t have the time or energy to clean the house.”

There are several other house cleaning businesses in Middle Tennessee that offer the service for free.
