Beezin’: Popular lip balm being used by teens trying to get high

Teens are using Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm on their eyelids in an effort get high.

Those who have taken part in beezin’ say the peppermint oil causes a tingling and burning sensation, which creates a sensation of being drunk or high.

Others have said it helps them stay alert.

“I think it’s crazy,” said college student Meredith Stocks. “I mean who would of thought that people would be doing that?”

“Teens. They’ll take anything to get a buzz,” concerned parent Garry Staggs said.

Burt’s Bees lip balm may be 100 percent natural, but it doesn’t make beezin’ safe.

Dr. Mary Romano at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital says beezin’ could lead to health risks like inflammation of the eye, swelling, and other symptoms similar to pink eye.

She said it’s not only dangerous but pointless since there is no active ingredient in the balm that could actually get someone high.

“Getting high means you create an effect on your brain where dopamine is released, which creates a pleasurable experience feeling,” Dr. Romano explained. “That’s what happens when you use drugs and that’s why they become addictive, so you’re absolutely not getting high.”

She recommends using the lip balm for what it’s intended for and leaving your eyelids alone.

She also advises parents to keep a close eye on viral trends and make sure their kids are not trying them.

Doctors warn anything not designed for the eyes could be a health hazard.
